About

Hi, I’m Laura and I live in a beautiful place on the shores of Lake Macquarie with my partner, our two gorgeous little girls, and a very hairy dog. We moved up here from Sydney’s Northern Beaches at the end of 2011 in search of a more affordable and less frenetic lifestyle. And we have certainly found it.

Originally from the UK, I work from home as a freelance translator and copywriter. In reality, however, my days – and sometimes my nights – revolve around Icklegen* and Baby Mivvy. We regularly set off on little adventures together. And we have discovered some beautiful spots: sandy beaches with hardly a soul in sight, a perfect rock pool for summer dips, child-friendly cafés that serve a decent flat white and cake…

This blog is my way of sharing some of our excursions out and about, craft activities, success stories and disasters in the kitchen, and anything else I feel like writing about.

I hope you enjoy reading it and are inspired to explore close to home and further afield.

Why Icklegen?

When I started writing this blog back in September 2013, I decided not to use my daughter’s real name, referring to her instead as Icklegen. “Ickle” means little and is a made-up word my sisters and I used when we were growing up. Fast forward two-and-a-half years and another ickle girl has arrived on the scene: Baby Mivvy. “Why not change the name of your blog?” I hear you ask. Well, it would be a bit of a hassle for starters; besides, I kind of like the name Icklegen. And I think it works well, in the sense of “little generation”, for a blog that is largely based around the two wonderful ickle people in my life.

    Dear Laura and Ickle,

Congratulations on the launch of icklegen!!! Although it looks like you’ve been writing for while before I’ve found you.

I’ve read through all your stories and caught up whilst on my lunch break. Icklegen is a great accompaniment to Tuna and salad wraps.

Its been so enjoyable – I’ve laughed and at times been quiet emotional because ickle is adorable and the stories so heartfelt but also because you are so good at this!!! I think you’ve found your perfect thing and hope you’ll be writing Icklegen for ages to come.

My only wish would be a subscription button to have new posts sent to my email. Can we do that (w)?

Looking more to lots of icklegen stories.

    Love Nerilee xx
